affiliate
affiliate - A company that will market your software for a percentage of each sale.
Several of the eCommerce companies that service software developers offer affiliate programs. In addition, there are affiliate management programs offered by companies that are not specifically related to the software industry.
The biggest concerns about affiliate programs in the software industry seem to be -
(1) How do you ensure that you can correctly track the affiliates' involvement in the sale and ensure that they receive their commission?
(2) How do you keep the affiliates from using spam and other inappropriate techniques to market your software and damage your brand?
(3) How do you keep affiliates from getting commissions on sales that you would have gotten yourself, with no commission being paid?
Age Curve
"The Age Curve - How to Profit from the Coming Demographic Storm" - a book by Kenneth W. Gronbach.
Gronbach is a demographer. He believes that the major changes that occur in economics and business have their basis in the size of successive generation. Major shifts in the number of people in each age group cause major shifts in society.
He realizes, of course, that his theory simplifies a very complex topic. That said, Gronbach argues convincingly that many of today's - and tomorrow's - market trend fluctuations are caused by population shifts.
Does this mean that software publishers should stop concentrating on their immediate marketing concerns? No. But trends are also important.
This book is about demographics in the United States, but its principles apply to the entire planet. Because the US represents the world's largest marketplace, all software development companies, from mISVs to giants, would benefit by knowing Gronbach's ideas about demographics.
It's critical for software vendors to offer polished applications. Developers need an intelligent business plan and a substantial marketing budget. But shifts in population are going to have a big influence on your success. Gronbach believes that demography dictates demand.
Basically, big and small generations take turns shaping the population and the economy. Small populations buy less.
Generations have personalities. Learn the demographics, and you'll sell more software.
This wonderful book gives you some insights into sales and marketing that you simply won't find in traditional marketing books. Read it!
AIDA
AIDA - An acronym for Awareness, Interest, Desire, and Action.
These are the goals of every advertising campaign.
To sell your software, you have to make prospects aware that it's available. You have to get them interested enough in your application to want to learn more about it. Your sales presentation has to make them want to own it. And you need a call to action - a well-placed series of "buy now" messages and links.
