Negotiate This!
"Negotiate This! - By Caring, But Not That Much" - A book by Herb Cohen.
I learned about "Negotiate This!" when Herb Cohen was being interviewed on the Imus in the Morning show. I bought it as a reference book, in case I were to find myself negotiating with suppliers, strategic partners, or colleagues.
But I found that the book is so interesting, I read it cover-to-cover.
It's a common-sense guide to dealing with people whose goals and objectives don't mesh well with yours. Every software microISV needs to have basic negotiation skills so that you can cross-market your software with other developers, trade website links with other webmasters, or negotiate an agreement with a software publisher.
"Negotiate This!" will give you the skills that you need. You can read my entire book review, along with reviews of dozens of other business and marketing books, on the book review archives on this site.
negotiation
negotiation - A necessary skill for all software developers.
It's important to be able to deal with suppliers, vendors, colleagues, and other stakeholders. And not all of these folks share your goals. Learning basic negotiation skills is a necessary skill for mISVs.
Never Wrestle with a Pig
"Never Wrestle with a Pig - and Ninety Other Ideas to Build Your Business and Career" - a book by Mark H. McCormack.
McCormack is best known for his earlier book, "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School".
"Never Wrestle with a Pig" is a compilation of nearly 100 separate essays about business life. Many of McCormack's ideas relate to working in a large enterprise. But most mISVs will be able to translate McCormack's advice into the world of the independent software vendor.
The author tells us that brainstorming can destroy creativity. Big ideas can be seductive. It's dangerous to underestimate your competitors. Never let fear paralyze you.
The book is an easy read, and an easy translation into the software development industry.
In this website's book review archive, you'll find my complete review of "Never Wrestle with a Pig", along with reviews of a few dozen business, marketing, sales, and writing books.
