tag line
tag line - The short, clever sales pitch that you place at the top of your home page.
Tag lines can capture visitors' attention, and encourage them to stay on your site and read about your software.
Among the worst tag lines are "Welcome to the [company name] website" and "[company name] is a small software company that is dedicated to providing users with the finest software available on the planet."
A good tag line clearly identifies the major benefit that your prospects will enjoy if they buy your software (for example, saving time, saving money, beating their competitors, doing something tomorrow that they're not able to do today, increasing their safety, or enjoying their life).
A tag line is also the title line of a press release.
Take Back Your Time
"Take Back Your Time - How to Regain Control of Work, Information, and Technology" - A book by Jan Jasper.
Few people take the time to, uh, plan their time. We're all busy, and we make our decisions based upon habit, other people's expectations, ads, and indecision caused by having too many choices. We end up squandering our time because we don't make deliberate decisions about how we should live our lives.
The secret of effective time management, Jasper tells us, is to clarify what matters most, so we can decide what we should stop doing. By eliminating low-level priorities, and by learning to how say "no", we'll reduce our stress levels, and accomplish a lot more with our lives.
I like the author's distinction between neatness and organization. All of us have figured out how to neatly save paper we don't need.
This is a good book. You can read entire my review of "Take Back Your Time" - it originally appeared in Al Harberg's Software Marketing Newsletter, and now it's here on this site, in my marketing archives.
target market
target market - The demographic group that is most likely to buy your software, according to conventional wisdom.
Conventional wisdom is not always wise, however. It never predicted the billion dollar market for men's grooming products, or many other marketing trends that were driven by social changes.
It's a good idea to think about what your target market is. And then think even harder about what your target market could be if you changed the focus of your marketing.
