PROVING THE NUMBERS!

VirtuallyFree.com completes its second full year online as a small business, marketing directory with good numbers.

It wasn't easy proving that the financially challenged could "level the field" without spending a lot of money. It is obvious to us that search engine listings alone won't get the job done. What one needs is a big list of directories and links, such as the free one offered on http://virtuallyfree.com

VirtuallyFree, aka Adfree is now 175 pages with 40 subjects, and offers over 10,000 linked business addresses (URLs) in two major categories: "How-to " and "Where-to". It attracts visitors at the rate of 40,000 monthly, with 225,000 page views-all without spending a dime on advertising!

The site also serves as Vanity Press for the self-help book, Input-Output Game and a marketing source for a restaurant service-bureau, The Smart Manager. We also recently launched two E-zines, Celebrity Business News, with articles written by Ron Seymour, which also offers 40 free celebrity screensavers and Internet Business News which offers Interactive Internetworking (free classifieds).

To date, we have given away over 3,000 copies of a zipped file of over 5,000 links along with a copy of a 100-page manual Entrepreneurs Internet; over 1,000 copies each of the 200-page book Input-Output Game and a 50-page booklet The Smart Manager. Why do we give so much of ourselves away? Good question!

As if this wasn't enough we have just launched a weekly newsletter for those busy business people who can't find the time to peruse our directory looking for the latest linking sites. the letter can be subscribed to "mailto:bryanfdn@earthlink.net".

What are we going to do with all of this? Prove a point of course! And it is this;

The internet is just what it's name implies, A network! Not a mass media vehicle. not TV. Not a place for mega-advertisers. A network of and for networkers! Only time will tell will prove me right. On the other hand if Rufus Murdock and Bill Gates decide they want to capture it...I personnaly think that will happen. Not this century anyway.

Your friendly search engine is not just a searching tool! It is also a brainstorming tool. In this age of the Small Office Home Office, Telecommuter and Telemarketer, it is sometimes difficult coming up with new ideas all by yourself. How often have you heard someone say, "I just came up with a new idea-brainstorming with myself" Actually, brainstorming requires two or more brains. It relies on exterior mental stimulation. What the person came up with was the uncovering of his or her own genius. The next time you are stuck for an idea, try your computer and an Internet connection. Then go directly to your friendly search engine.

Brainstorming is used as a problem solver and/or a new idea generator. When you put your brain, and your favorite Internet search engine together, you will be in for a pleasant experience.

There seems to be a common problem with many Search Engine users in that they want the search results to be exactly what they were looking for. Brain storming means getting answers and finding ideas that you did not know existed.

Before you begin to experiment, examine some of the basics of "brainstorming."

The number one rule in brainstorming is to allow someone else's brain to interact with your- idea, your project, your problem. Hard to do when you work alone! However, when you bring your computer and a search engine together, you are inviting thousands of brains to the problem solving party.

The second rule is to let new thoughts get as wild as possible. In other words don't stop or say no to a fresh idea, no matter how wild it is. Is this starting to sound like some of the returns we get from search engines? Just bookmark some of the titles, and go on until you think you have enough new ideas to keep you busy for awhile. You can also bookmark entire pages and return to them for reference as needed.

The third rule is to not stop the thought trends until they have exhausted themselves. This may sometimes mean going beyond the recommended top 30 offerings. How often have you come away from a search engine search feeling that the computer did not understand what you were looking for? Or on the other hand, maybe you didn't present the search request properly. In either case, you were unhappy with the results.

What would you think about the same results if you regarded them as input from your friends and associates? Would you look at them a little less demanding, giving leniency for your friends and associates shortcomings? Probably! Can you imagine inviting 1,000 friends to a brainstorming session? You can with your computer!

The only part of a computerized brainstorming session that is missing is the emotional part. And that could be a blessing.

For the following illustration, we used Infoseek at: http://www.infoseek.com/

CASH FLOW

Here are the results:

Infoseek:

The concept of good brainstorming is that one good idea leads to another. This feature, "more about this" is built into the Excite results. Hot Bot:

These nine examples are only the beginning...

I can't remember the times I have sat with clients and/or associates brainstorming the subject "cash-flow" with fewer positive results, and with a lot more time invested.

Now, when you have time, go back to your favorite search engine and enter you own ideas or problems, see how many new ideas you can be rewarded with?
