CD-Quick Cache Makes Old and New CD-ROM Drives Run Faster

Circuit Systems, Inc. has announced the release of CD-Quick Cache 3.0, a Windows 95 utility that will increase the speed of your CD-ROM drives, new or old.

By storing frequently used CD-ROM information on your hard drive or in RAM, CD-Quick Cache makes it available in a fraction of the time it would take to retrieve it from your CD-ROM drive, even if you're using the latest 32X drives.

Unlike simple cache programs, CD-Quick Cache uses an intelligent caching algorithm and dynamic read-ahead buffering to ensure enhanced performance. Its persistent disk cache feature lets the program keep track of up to 256 different CD-ROM titles on up to 32 CD-ROM drives. CD-Quick Cache can save your cached data and volume information, even after you shut down your computer. CD-Quick Cache also offers smart caching of full motion AVI, QuickTime and MPEG video clips, allowing your games and education programs to run faster.

Two factors determine a CD-ROM drive's performance. The first, data transfer rate, can be enhanced by making the drive spin faster. The hardware manufacturers have moved steadily from the original 150 Kb/second drives to today's 24X and 32X drives. The second factor, access time or "seek time," is the time it takes to reposition a drive's read head to a new location and read information. The hardware manufacturers can't do very much to enhance seek times, but CD-Quick Cache can, by reducing the number of times your CD-ROM needs to be accessed. By converting sluggish CD-ROM reads to lightning-fast hard drive or RAM reads, CD-Quick Cache dramatically increases the throughput of data from your CD-ROM drive.

CD-Quick Cache installs in about one minute, and comes with two additional utilities: CD-Test will evaluate the performance of your CD-ROM system, and QuickMon will give you statistical information on the effectiveness of CD-Quick Cache's performance enhancements.

CD-Quick Cache for Windows 95 costs $29. You can download a fully-featured evaluation version from their website: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/circuitsys
