Space Hound 32 Sniffs Out Wasted Hard Drive Space

Fineware Systems has released Space Hound 32 version 3.0, a Windows 98/95/NT utility that lets you recover valuable disk space by sniffing out duplicate, obsolete or lost files on your hard drive. Space Hound provides a battery of tools that let you determine which files you need and which you can safely delete from your system.

Space Hound can generate lists of duplicate files based on criteria as simple as your drive name or as complex as file masks, sizes, dates and attributes. When searching for duplicate files, Space Hound can examine multiple drives and perform three levels of search: It can find files with duplicate filenames, files with duplicate filenames that are truly duplicates, and files which are identical to each other despite having different filenames. In addition to deleting, copying, moving or launching files, Space Hound lets you create space-saving .zip archives for files that you no longer need to keep on your hard drive.

Unlike dangerous sweep or cleanup programs, Space Hound deletes nothing from your hard drive. It identifies candidates for deletion based upon easy-to-define criteria, and gives you tools to examine the files before disposing of them. Space Hound's Duplicate File Suggestion feature offers expert advice on which files can be safely eliminated when duplicates are found. There are file viewers that let you examine your text, graphics, fonts and sound files, as well as a built-in hexadecimal viewer for advanced users. For further analysis, you can export Space Hound's reports in database or spreadsheet formats. These sophisticated tools can help you manage your files, and uncover files that you thought were lost.

Using the SnapShot Report, Space Hound lets you examine your system at two different times, and see what has changed. It generates a display of all files that have changed or been added or removed.

To help you zoom in on the files that are using up your disk drive, Space Hound's Directory Map gives you storage totals for any directory and its nested sub directories.

For advanced users, Space Hound can display all of your application's programs, components and system elements. You can even look at the version information for each element. Space Hound will search for embedded text within files, and can perform proximity searches for words that are near each other in the files.
